At the dawning of the nineteenth century, Alexander von Humboldt explained how elevation on a mountain affects plantlife in much the same manner as going north from the equator.  This and other of his work founded the concept of biogeography, and since his time we have learned much about the connectedness of landscapes and lifescapes.  Traveling up Fall River is almost like a journey with Humboldt.  We will search for the ferns that know their rocks, the birds that know their trees, and other linkages that reveal the scope of nature’s connectedness.
